Crofton-Bloomfield Qualifies Four For State Tournament
On Friday, February 9, the Crofton-Bloomfield wrestling team headed to Malcolm, Nebraska for the Class C District-1 wrestling tournament. The team competed both Friday and Saturday for the chance to qualify for the state tournament in Omaha this week. The team qualified four wrestlers for state. Seniors Jaden Janssen (3rd place), Ethan Poppe (2nd place), Quinten Moles (1st place), and Reece McFarland (3rd place) all earned a state tournament bid. This will be Moles`s third trip to Omaha, while Poppe and Janssen will be making their second trip. McFarland qualified for his first state tournament by beating a state medalist in the “heartbreak round”.
Janssen won his first two matches of the tournament but lost a tough semi-final match 6-5. He came back to win his “heartbreak round” match 4-0. Poppe won his first three matches but lost in the finals 5-3. Moles went went unbeaten in the tournament, winning his finals match 5-4. Mcfarland won his first match of the tournament, but lost his second 11-5. He wrestled back and won is qualifying match 2-0, and in the consolation finals he avenged his second round loss by earning a first round pin. “Right now, it [qualifying for state] doesn't feel very special until we get down to Omaha. It just feels like a regular week” said Janssen when asked how it felt to qualify for state again.
The four will head to Omaha on Wednesday night to prepare to compete Thursday through Saturday. First round action will take place at the Centurylink Center in Omaha on Thursday morning.
