Crofton Speech Team Battles in Battle Creek

On Saturday, February 24, the Crofton speech team headed to Battle Creek for the annual Mid State Conference Speech Meet.

Overall, the team took fourth place, with eight events breaking finals. In Informative Speaking, Kalli Mueller and Taylor Schieffer placed third and fifth respectively. In Persuasive Speaking, Haley Arens earned the championship. In Extemporaneous Speaking, Taylor Schieffer took the runner-up position. In Oral Interpretation of Humorous Prose, Tyler Janssen placed fifth. In Oral Interpretation of Poetry, Haley Arens took fourth. In Duet Acting, MaKenzie Mellem and Kaylee Koch ended up in fifth place. In Oral Interpretation of Drama, Miles Bossman, Thomas Honeywell, Connor Dahl, Gabriel Potts, and Tyler Janssen took home the championship medal.

Bossman, Honeywell, Dahl, Potts, and Janssen made the All Conference Speech Team in OID alongside Arens in Persuasive Speaking. They all received this honor due to placing first in their respective events.

“It didn’t go as well as we hoped, but it was a close competition between the top four teams. We were in good company with those teams and the disappointments will only be setbacks if we don’t learn and improve from them,” said head coach Mitch Hofer when asked how he felt the meet went.

If you are interested in watching the speakers compete one last time before districts, the varsity team will be headed to Norfolk for the Norfolk Panther Classic meet, and the JV team will be headed to Creighton for the Creighton Bulldog Invite. Both meets are scheduled to start at 8:00 a.m.
